End Mandatory Detention

Wentworth for Refugees meet your candidate forum

The situation for asylum seekers on Nauru and Manus Island is a humanitarian crisis. I call for an end to mandatory detention and the immediate removal of children and families off Nauru.

  • I encourage third country settlement for all peoples detained on Nauru and Manus Island, with a pathway to full citizenship in their country of resettlement.
  • We must have faster processing of asylum seeker applications.
  • The adoption of real, humane solutions for detained asylum seekers will allow for the closure of off-shore detention centres in Nauru and Manus as soon as possible.
  • Australians are compassionate people and expect better. We must act immediately.

The expulsion of MSF this week Médecins Sans Frontières by the Nauruan Government this week has reinforced the scale of this humanitarian crisis.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has called for Australia to immediately evacuate its offshore detention centres to prevent an unfolding health crisis in the wake of the ejection of MSF this week from Nauru.
